Nature tells complex stories of ephemerality and interconnectedness, sometimes most poignantly when it interacts with culture.

I made the sketch for this painting in the dark outside of Cusco, Peru. This painting was inspired by a scene in Luis Bunuel’s film of the same name. In many cultures, the deceaseds’ spirit is believed to depart toward the setting sun, so the door of a tomb is often located at the west. A loosew departure from Antonio (Canaletto) Canale’s original painting. As sea levels rose, amphibians were among the first to perish en masse. I don’t remember the rest of the dream, just this hypnopompic image right before waking up. In this dream the water was amazingly clear. What you might find. Molecular engineers can design and synthesize complex polymers that grow in almost lifelike ways. Like a spider, an engineered molecule can trigger insertion of polymer subunits behind it, thus effectively “excreting” a thread to which it remains attached. As engineering frontiers expand, even more lifelike behaviors will be attainable.

The technological shift in electronics from analog to digital was paralleled by a paradigm shift in mathematics, with discrete and combinatorial maths replacing traditional continuous analytical maths. Continuous objects are now converted to discrete representations for processing on digital computers. A painting by Telmo Leon inspired the vase in this scene. There are many means by which to advance new and evolved ways of thinking and being.
